Nikon has announced more lenses for its digital SLR camera lines, including a AF DX Fisheye Nikkor 10.5mm f/2.8G ED which provides 180 degrees of view. To be available in Fall of 2003. Of interest to panoramic photographers, "...Nikon Capture will provide a correction for straight edged panorama shooting." Sounds intriguing. Thanks to Rob Galbraith.

Nikon announced a new pro digital SLR today, the D2H. This is the replacement for the D1H, a specialized DSLR for photojournalists. Key attributes include 4 megapixels, continuous shooting rate of 8 frames/second for up to 40 JPEG or 25 NEFs in its large buffer, USB v2.0, 37ms shutter lag, orientation sensor, optional 802.11 connectivity and transmission of photos. The camera uses a new sensor developed by Nikon which is reputed to be much faster than regular CMOS sensors. Thanks to DPreview, who has a preview of the camera available linked from the above page.

Nikon has a new ultra wide-angle fisheye lens out for their Coolpix
5400/5700 digital cameras. It is called the FC-E9 and provides 190/183 (depending on which camera) degrees of field of view, and has an objective dimension of 5.6mm.
I have not heard any feedback yet from panoramic photographers as to
the lens's qualities for VR. Nor is it clear to me whether the lens
is limited to just those two cameras or if it might work on a CP5000.

VRlog provides news, developments and analysis of the virtual reality (VR) world from a nature photographer's perspective. Since I am not connected to or funded by any VR vendor, I intend to objectively appraise what's going on, and the direction VR is headed in. -- erik goetze
