Still Reading

I'm having a great time with Jane Smiley's MOO. I think I picked it up in South Dakota at a discount bookstore.  The plot of MOO revolves around a large midwestern agro-centric university (Smiley teaches at Iowa State).  I thought it was an interesting starting point for something familiar since I'm working in the tiny university town of Brookings, South Dakota, home to South Dakota State University.

Smiley is regularly having me bent over with laughter with her characterizations of the people at 'Moo U':  A student who is helping a professor raise pigs, a girl who thinks she has a "photographic memory" majoring in early childhood development, a literature prof who drives a Saab and spends as much time as he can on the east coast at 'Writers Conferences' and many others.  I read some reviews on Amazon and some people disliked the onslaught of characters but I love it (at this point, I'm not too far).

Not Dead (Yet)

What is hell?  Hell is not having an internet connection during the day - such is my life at the moment.  My high school has an alumni site hosted on MyFamily.com and today I happened upon some photos of where I spent so many days of teen angst.

This little area is where I spent most of it; a tiny little missionary school called Rosslyn Academy.

It all seemed so insignificant and meagre at the time but I now realize that my experience was rich - beyond what many people I considered more lucky than myself had.
