A good friend asked if I would like to see a film from her country, which I have been asking to do for some time. She had sourced a copy from somewhere, and suggested that we watch it together. We would have to see it together, because it was in a foreign language (not even written with a Latin alphabet, I tell you!) and of course there were no subtitles.
So there we sat, yesterday evening, watching this film on a laptop computer, me staring at the screen while she gave real-time translations and background commentary. It was great to see the country through her eyes; she knows it very, very well and loves to share its history and culture with others. About halfway through she realized that it was quite a depressing film, but that didn't matter. It was a lovely story, made more special because I've never had someone translate a film for me while I was watching it.
I'll miss many things here; I'm not sure when I'll next see a film without subtitles, or have someone so kind who can explain it all to me.
