Of the many things that upset Lucky in class, pedantic questioning by students is in the running for top billing. If you disagree with the professor, ask yourself whether it's over a difference in degree or a difference in kind. The latter may warrant discussion, but the former rarely does.
Professors have different roles, depending on the class, but you will infrequently hear them claim to have "the answer". What all of them have is a way for you to think about problems or situations.
Today's Power & Politics class was rife with pedants. People just couldn't stop arguing with the prof over things that just didn't matter. So you think you know two thousand people, and he thinks you know three thousand? The point is that you know a lot of people; it doesn't matter how many. You think that you can "care deeply" about 50 people, and he says it's really only 12? The point is that emotional capacity is limited, not what the limit actually is.
Please, before you argue with someone, ask yourself what their message really is. It is rarely about a number, rarely about a fact. There are messages behind each lesson, and disputes about details will easily obscure the subtle tuition that is the object of the interaction. You may not remember the facts one year from now, but you should remember the stories that they told.
