Engler's Legacy
A column by Detroit News columnist Thomas Bray (who also writes weekly for the Wall Street Journal's online Opinion Journal) offers thoughts on the legacy and accomplishments of Gov. John Engler's 12 years in office, as he now enters his last six months in that position. An excerpt:
"There is a reason that Democrats had so much difficulty fielding challengers to Engler: Voters may not have found him very warm and fuzzy, but they saw in him a tough politician willing to take on the tough issues. They said he lacked charisma, but that wasn't true either: His charisma derived from the fact that he was a consequential man."
