Here are two interesting InfoWorld articles regarding open source databases.  There may just be an opening for these databases.  There are some obvious areas where proprietary databases are ahead, but don't discount the power and functionality of open source.

Of course IBM and Microsoft reject MySQL as one might expect - no surprise there...

According to Ballmer, Microsoft will outsmart open source.  Interesting article from ZD Net.  At least he acknowledges that Linux is a competitor.  They can't compete on price!
