Steve McConnell (the author of the article linked above) has also written Code Complete.  It's another book that every programmer should read at least twice.  It's full of practical advice and most importantly it emphasizes over and over again the human aspects of software development.

As far as I'm concerned, this article should be mandatory reading for anyone involved in any phase of software development.  Even the customers might benefit from reading this.  It's truly one of the most lucid explanations of the forces shaping software development I've ever read.
