Leaders in Rural Economic Development Interviewed

Recently, June Holley of the Appalachian Center for Economic Networks (ACENet) and Jim Sayer of the Sierra Business Council (SBC) were interviewed regarding their thoughts on community development in rural areas.  June and Jim are at the forefront of innovative economic development outside the urban mainstream and emphasize concurrent cultivation of community, the environment, entrepreneurs, and robust and effective networks.

By the way, I'll be among the participants of the SBC's annual conference in Mammoth, California on September 25th and 26th.

Power to the Edge

Power to the Edge:  A new book by Dave Alberts and Richard Hayes - open sourced in its entirety by CCRP

This book is truly a must-read for anyone interested in decentralization and the social and organizational relevance of shifting power to the edge, whether in a commercial or a defense context.  As you read about the technology enablers of the edge, it'll become clear why products such as Groove - as COTS enablers of the fully-networked collaborative environment - have such immediate relevance to the defense community.

A debt of gratitude goes to John Stenbit and Lin Wells for catalyzing the creation of this tremendously timely, useful and relevant piece of work. [Ray Ozzie's Weblog]

My colleague Jason Barrett at Bias for Action speaks of the need for an initiative-based culture in order to enable an organization to adapt successfully in an environment marked by ubiquitous uncertainty.  To Jason, the characteristic of an initiative-based culture is the decentralization of control.  I share Ozzie's interest in the application of technology to enable such decentralization -- and enable Pioneer Entrepreneurs in the process.
