[Item Permalink] Develop information techology for the intoxicated -- Comment()
Yesterday I submitted a column on developing information technology for the intoxicated. I wonder if the column will be published by anyone. The topic is perhaps a bit off-the-wall. But here is a quote which points out one possible application of the technology:
Certain emotions naturally arise in computer use -- I, for instance, have learned to love the crazy, rich, unpredictable anarchy of the Internet (the biggest library in the world, but run by drunken librarians).

When I wrote about the book Free Culture by Lessig I forgot to mention that this book is available on the net under a Creative Commons license. There are also several remixes of the book, including audio versions. I bought the printed version anyway.

[Item Permalink] Developing the Stockholm syndrome -- Comment()
Yesterday the Finnish tv broadcast a fascinating document about the Norrmalmstorg robbery in Stockholm in 1973. This robbery gave the name to the Stockholm syndrome: "The Stockholm syndrome is a psychological state in which the victims of a kidnapping, or persons detained against their free will - prisoners - develop a relationship with their captor(s). This solidarity can sometimes become a real complicity, with prisoners actually helping the captors to achieve their goals or to escape police."

By the way, Patty Hearst is now 50 years old. In 1974 she developed an extreme case of the Stockholm syndrome: "Hearst claimed she had been locked blindfolded in a closet and physically and sexually abused, which caused her to become a convert to the SLA." Later she has appeared in several movies.

Stop dancing around the elephant: "I went to an Al-Anon meeting tonight where one of the participants said something that really stuck with me. When you live with an alcoholic, he said, the disease is like the proverbial elephant in the middle of the room. At first, you dance around the elephant, pretending it’s not there. When you finally acknowledge the elephant’s presence, however, it doesn’t disappear. It’s still sitting there, as big as ever. And you’re still dancing around it, still trying to avoid getting trampled." [mamamusings]

In Finland there is a book about alcoholism titled A hippopotamus in the living room (written by Tommy Hellsten in 1992, see a review in Finnish). The above quote reminds of this book, which generated a lot of discussion (and criticism) in Finland, so the message of the book has become a kind of folklore.

Album sales jump 7%: "Ernest Miller offers this Reuters story reporting that the record industry enjoyed a 7% increase in music album sales for the first half of 2004 over 2003. Doesn't sound like a crisis to me..." [JD's New Media Musings]
