I ran out of space in my November column in Inside Business. One of the topics was e-Learning and how it has evolved.
E-learning has gone way beyond the traditional courses. Stanford Medical School is using E-pelvis which allows a student to practice on a pelvic mannequin that is hooked up to a PC. The PC monitors the location and intensity of the students touch so the first real world patients are not guinea pigs.
There’s always one kid who doesn’t want to dissect the frog in biology class. Now students can go to sites like http://www.froguts.com and virtually dissect various critters. The frogs are saved for other uses (Mmm, tastes like chicken). Plus there are text pop-ups, sound effects and other aids that make the experience more educational than the real thing. Students can repeat as many times as needed and try different approaches - tough to do in bio lab with the formaldehyde fumes fogging your brain.
