Guilford County Schools - Thoughts
In case this causes another stir in progressive circles, I reiterate here (with typos corrected) what I just posted over on the Boss Hogg's blog.
Regarding the SCALES program:
Most Americans might be surprised to learn that in the technologically advanced and kicking our butt in test scores nation of Japan, children are only forced to complete the equivalent of 9th grade. Public and public subsidized private schools carry out education through 12th grade but only for the willing.
Rather than lock all recalcitrant kids up in the SCALES program, why not give them the option of an "honorable discharge" at age 16 if they can pass out on a reading and writing skills test? This would give them an incentive to learn and leave.
Kids are pretty smart and many are only reacting as expected for those who view the SCALES program as incarceration without due process.
