Fun with Commissioners
Whoo Hoo! I made a speech at the Guilford County Commissioners' meeting tonight and collected $145.00 for the MS Walk. Racheal, (my seven year old for those who don't know) was very sociable and eagerly passed around the MS brochures and the clipboard. Commissioner Thigpen suggested she be awarded with a pin with the Guilford County seal on it. This because she was a youngster attending the Commissioners' meeting. This pin was graciously donated by Commissioner Davis right off his shirt. Thanks, Commissioners! Thanks also to Jim Capo, Bob Copley, and Roger Cotten for their donations as well.
Jim Capo made a speech about a resolution that the Greensboro City Council Human Relations Commission recently passed, denouncing parts of the US Patriot Act and certain Executive Orders. Jim mentioned this to the Commissioners so that a seed could be planted for the same type of thing to happen in the Guilford County ruling body. Basically plans are also to name Sheriff Barnes supreme lawman of Guilford County, above the Feds and anyone who may try to rescind local power and residents' civil rights.
At the end of the Commissioners' meeting regular citizen speaker Bob Copley made a second speech about illegal immigrants. I took it to mean all immigrants at first, that "they are the source of the problem" in this country. Well, I heartily disagree with that.
I don't know what to think of immigrants being here illegally but, how can you prevent someone from coming over? I got up and mentioned that if it weren't for immigrants being allowed to stay here, I wouldn't be here either. My relatives, most recently my grandfather, came here from other countries.
"The problem" is murderers, rapists, and thieves. This has always been the problem. This second speech of mine was short, but I felt compelled to speak on immigration after those remarks.
It seems a narrow view to be afraid of immigrants. I fear this mindset is too close to the mindset of Congressman Howard Coble saying he thinks it was actually good for Japanese Americans to be "rounded up" in camps. What?! Where's the freedom lover in this statement?
