Astronomical Surface Decorations on Ceramics, Mesoamerica part X As far as what sort of astronomical events might have been placed on ceramics (and seemed to have been placed on Mayan Stelae) D. M. Urquidi has complied a host of data and offered a sample of it online. These pre-telescope sitings may have been dramatic enough to record in their own right, would probably need to have been explained (or incorporated into) Mayan beliefs, and allow for a standard of dating other events.
