EduResources Weblog--Higher Education Resources Online
This weblog focuses on locating, evaluating, discussing, and providing guidelines to instructional resources for faculty and students in higher education. The emphasis is on free, shared, HE resources. Related topics and news (about commercial resources, K-12 resources, T&D resources, educational technology, digital libraries, distance learning, open source software, metadata standards, cognitive mapping, etc.) will also be discussed--along with occasional excursions into more distant miscellaneous topics in science, computing, and education. The EduResources Weblog operates in conjunction with a broader weblog called The Open Learner about using open knowledge resources across a diversity of subjects, levels, and interests for a wide range of learners and learning communities--students in schools and colleges, home schoolers, hobbyists, vocational learners, retirees, and others.

These resources cover ages 11-18, grades 6-12. The links are of value for an even broader grade/age range.   "Welcome to the learning resources area for the Oxford English Dictionary. On this part of the site, we are collecting a variety of materials which will help education professionals to incorporate OED Online into their teaching, and introduce students to research techniques which encourage them to explore the riches of the Dictionary."

"As well as sample lesson plans and exercises, we will be adding more quizzes and word stories, and offering links to other sites on which similar materials for language study can be found."

The resources are organized by topics, types, and age groups.

I saw a review of the this digital collection in The Resource Shelf. It's worth a visit. I especially like the Science Collection which contains resource materials for instruction. "The University of Wisconsin Digital Collections (UWDC) was created in the summer of 2001. The Council of Wisconsin libraries and UW System's Office of Learning & Information Technology established the UWDC to provide quality digital resources from its academic libraries to UW faculty, staff and students, citizens of the state, and scholars at large." It's exciting and challenging to think about the context for research and instruction that will exist when most large universities provide substantial (and open) digital libraries; it's also daunting to consider how a user might find something when searching across multiple digital libraries. ___JH

Yes, we do love digital libraries here on ResourceShelf, and we stumbled across a really good one this week that we would like to share with you. Clear a block of time in your schedule before you start browsing here because there is plenty to see.

"The University of Wisconsin Digital Collections provides quality digital resources from its academic libraries to UW faculty, staff and students, citizens of the state, and scholars at large." To be perfectly honest, I stumbled into this site via a "side door," if you will. I enjoy looking at prints of birds in old books (especially woodpeckers), and there is an amazing series of volumes digitized here -- A natural history of birds. Most of which have not been figur'd or describ'd, and others very little known from obscure or too brief descriptions without figures, or from figures very ill design'd, by one George Edwards (1694-1773). Who could resist "The great spotted cuckow"? Definitely not me....

Much more to look at here. Poke around and find treasures of your own. For those who are working on a digital project at their own institutions...or are thinking of doing so, you'll find extensive documentation that includes "detailed and specific workflows, project models, and industry standards," and also a page of related links. And last, but certainly not least, there's contact information for the hard-working people behind this initiative. - Shirl
