Friday Five — Homes

Late this week because I kept trying to remember every place I've ever lived. I've probably missed some!

1. How many houses/apartments have you lived in throughout your life?

Houses: Three as a child, twice stayed with friends while I was homeless—but fortunately not out on the street—stayed with friends when I started a new job, shared one with my sister, and then there was my grandmother's house in Kent. (I lived with her for a while and later, after she died, my son and I moved into her house.)

Dorm rooms: Moved around a lot in the dorms when I was at BYU. Helaman Halls for summer programs and later as a freshman. When I returned to school after a break I lived in Deseret Towers. And when I was working in Houston, I lived in the hospital dorms. (The student nurses lived there, all the doctors on staff had a room where they could stay when they were on call, and a few other odds & ends of hospital staff, such as myself, chose to live there to avoid the expense and commute involved in living farther away.)

Apartments: Here's where I'm really likely to lose count! One in Provo, Utah. Eight different places in Salt Lake City—one in South Salt Lake, one on East South Temple, and six in the Avenues. Back in Washington: One in Seattle's Wallingford neighborhood, two in Burien, three here in Des Moines. Let's see, that's fifteen apartments.

Grand Total: 8 houses + 15 apartments + at least half a dozen dorm rooms = about 30 places in 50 years. (No wonder I'm sick of moving!)

2. Which was your favorite and why? The Des Moines apartment I'm in now. Plenty of space, big windows looking out on yard, convenient location. Now if I just didn't have noisy upstairs neighbors...

3. Do you find moving house more exciting or stressful? Why? As many times as I've moved over the years I have no intention of moving again unless I either can afford to buy a house myself or marry a guy who already owns a house. Then moving might actually be exciting. Mostly I just think of it as exhausting!

4. What's more important, location or price? Location. Though I've generally had to deal with lack of money so I don't already have the dream house...

5. What features does your dream house have? Big windows looking out on greenery. Good lighting in every room. Lots of wallspace for bookshelves. Big closets. Soundproofing between rooms!!!!! Closest neighbors a couple miles away but still close enough to town for garbage pickup and convenient grocery shopping.
