Free Web Space
Somehow I managed to get myself sidetracked from the truly urgent projects in my life and have spent most of the day checking up on the status of all my free web space.
For a while, way back when, I was making an effort to compile a directory of all the free website hosts. Naturally, the best way to review a host was to create a site. (Usually just a basic home page, though in some instances I built a whole site.)
Well, webhost reviewing has long since fallen by the wayside but I've held onto most of the sites I made during that stretch of time. Every so often, like today, I get the urge to go through them all to see which are still there. As you might expect, a lot of the formerly free hosts now want to get paid. And of course other hosts are simply no longer in business at all.
For a while, the free hosts that were left had an incredibly annoying array of popups (or worse!) but I discovered today that the number of ads thrown in my face has drastically dropped. That's a relief! Might actually get around to filling some of that space now that visitors won't get totally bombarded by ads. (I purposely don't use a popup blocker so I can keep tabs on the ad situation on my sites. More than once I've moved material because the popups got out of hand.)
What would be really nice, though, would be to simply have the budget for "real" hosting complete with my own domains! I'm ready to make the move as soon as the cash shows up.
