Software For Ransom I wonder if they based this on the NewtSync license, since it was noted on SlashDot that NewtSync would be freed after 300 copies are sold. [Slashdot]

At 1033 lines of code, I think I may be able to sync Newton dates to the Mac. Can't sync the Mac dates to the Newton yet. Can't sync repeating dates or notes. This stuff would be a lot easier if they made their API public, instead of making people rely on Apple Events.

Eager Rush to Own a Home Brings Rash of Foreclosures. Home mortgages nationwide are being foreclosed at the highest rate in 30 years, according to a recent report. By Peter T. Kilborn. These are all signs of an economy that failed when we were all naiive enough to think the good times would last forever. I fell for it as well; when I was getting regular pay raises and had cheap rent, I had thousands per month to spare. But instead of saving it or paying off all of my debt, I lived like a rock star. I'm living more sensibly now, and I guess I don't regret all of the fun I had. But I'm one of the lucky ones; I escaped with my employment unscathed (thus far). And while I still spend money (I bought a couple of CDs despite my general hatred of the music industry, and I desperately needed a new office chair), I'm trying to only spend money that I get out of external projects. And I'm putting several hundred into cutting down recurring expenses and debt. [New York Times: NYT HomePage]

Okay, more progress on the Dates-iCal sync. I'm implementing all of the iCal communications in AppleScript, because this is the only public API for iCal. There's a private framework, but the DMCA and my non-discolsure agreement with Apple both prevent me from using that. Unfortunately their schema is fairly limited, so I won't be able to support some things like alarms. I've put all of the iCal communications into a wrapper class, so that if a better public API is published, I can switch it over with as little effort as possible.

Racer Beta for Mac This seemed really cool so I downloaded it. My system slowed to a crawl and it took me 10 minutes to bring up the Force Quit dialog. I then promptly deleted the game. [MacSlash: A daily dose of Macintosh News and Discussion]

ActiveX Control Acting Up. Microsoft's Internet Explorer has another gaping security hole, this time because of an ActiveX control with some bad code. Will the patch even stick? By Michelle Delio. I love this quote: "There's a new hole in the slab of security Swiss cheese otherwise known as Microsoft's Internet Explorer Web browser." [Wired News]
