Time magazine loves Dick Cheney. Americans aren't so sure. The newsweekly gushes over the V.P. and the Bush administration in its year-end issue -- ignoring its own poll showing a major erosion in public support for the White House.

Mercury News: Rave party at Cow Palace turns deadly. It's articles like these that fuel the ridiculous wastes of time and violations of American rights that make up this country's war on drugs. This is irresponsible journalism at its finest; while it stipulates that the deaths have not yet been determined to be drug-related, and that fatal or serious reactions to drugs like Ecstasy are only 1 in 10,000, it does so as a sidenote late in the article.

Toy recall database: fatal amusements. Clive sez: "Unbelievably compelling reading: A database of all toy-product recalls, including blow-by-blow explanations of the physical damage the toys can do. You can search by toy name, manufacturer, or, most grimly, the type of "problem with toy" you want to find. Here's a taste -- from the recall of the "Galoob Sky Dancers" toys:"

PROBLEM WITH TOY: The hard plastic Sky Dancers® dolls can fly rapidly in unpredictable directions, and can hit and injure both children and adults. Galoob® has received 170 reports of the dolls striking children and adults resulting in 150 reports of injuries. They include eye injuries, including scratched corneas and incidents of temporary blindness, broken teeth, a mild concussion, a broken rib, and facial lacerations that required stitches.

The song that I'm listening to obsessively lately: Peter Gabriel's "Growing Up." The whole album is good, but this song is so catchy and layered that I can't stop listening to it. (69 times so far, according to iTunes.) If Mr. Gabriel released this as a single I'm sure he'd have another "Sledgehammer" on his hands. Of course maybe he doesn't want that kind of radio play now, in the days of ClearChannel.

iCal 1.0.1 has been released. It fixes several speed problems and a bug which prevented me from deleting records in iCal after they're deleted from the Newton.

CNN: Air Force pushes 'go pills'. "I want something else to get me through this semi-charmed kind of war." Apparently drugs are OK if they're used to help kill our enemies.
