While I naturally tend toward pessimism, I try to maintain my sanity and positive outlook by trying to find a silver lining. Sometimes that's a difficult thing to do. America is going to war, whether the Americans want it or not. And the mass media is rightly behind the war machine, because a war will boost TV ratings far beyond what Joe Millionaire's producers ever dreamed of. So what's the silver lining? Well, rental prices are dropping, so I got a good deal on a new apartment. And, right now is a great time to buy stock. It's a great time to get in on a company that has the savings to weather the storm, such as Apple or perhaps Nike.
And while I think Bush's ultimatum is reprehensible and will damage our reputation and relationships with other nations for years, it could serve one or two purposes. If the war is swift and there are minimal civilian casualties as Bush promises, then the action could be good for the American stock market. If it becomes a disaster, then one could hope that this level of snafu at the administrative level will ensure that Bush doesn't get re-elected.
Once again, I'm on the record as being very strongly opposed to the war, at least without full UN approval. But it's important not to let your fanaticism take over your life or outlook. |
