$75 billion has been earmarked by Bush for the war. $75 billion. And only $4 billion to help eliminate the oil dependence which gives leaders like Saddam their power. Can you imagine if we'd earmarked that amount for alternative energy research startups? I agree that Iraq needs a regime change, but without UN cooperation we're doing this at the expense of our own faltering economy. Sure, Saddam poses a danger to America, and his regime needs to change. But even excluding the American soldiers that will be killed and tortured, how many American civilians will suffer poverty, homelessness, suicide, and slides into drug usage and crime due to job losses and a feeling of general helplessness? Literally thousands of people have been arrested here in San Francisco due to the ongoing protests. And all of this is being completely ignored and swept under the rug, but I believe that the prevailing feeling of malaise and hopelessness could pose a more widespread problem for this country than terrorists will. 11:11:03 AM |
