Flash Applications - via Kevin Lynch

Kevin spins the idea of using Flash as an application tool (in the same style as VB or Delphi). Its an interesting question and the comments are full of ideas (and some concerns from Director folks). One of the ideas is for a ActionScript SDK and this is followed up with AS compilers etc.

Some time ago I looked at creating an AS compiler for SSAS within .NET, I even floated the idea past Jermey :) One of the things that Macromedia could do is to help with an open source project in order to build a SSAS compiler but in the mean time helping with a open source project and sharing the code with the word. They have done this before with project such as Rhino (the Java compiler for JavaScript that SSAS is currently based on) and Axis. At the time only the JScript compiler in Rotor was available and Jeremy felt the shared source license would prevent them from using it as a base. Now we have Mono and GNU .NET and both projects are building a JavaScript compiler (from the same code base, which was orginally called JavaScript for .NET - JANET). I see this as a great chance for Macromedia to get involved and a great base on which SSAS for .NET could be based.

.NET Developers Journal

A great month in print for the CLI implementations, this journal continues to be of great value and this month looks at Mono, Rotor and GNU .NET.  Along with a guest editorial from Miguel De Icaza (leader of the Mono project for those of you who don't know him), regular Mono column and a fantastic column from Jason Whittington what more can you ask for !!

Generative Programming

Code generation is a subject that I know John Lam is exploring, this is however only a part of a group of technologies and methods that fall under the name of Generative Programming (GP). While researching the subject I found this book in my local borders, only just started to read it but it looks like a great text to GP and sub-subjects such as Code generation and AOP (another of John's fave subjects :). I very curious about both GP code generation and AOP and how it fits into .NET.
