Google and blogging, portals, etc.

I saw in the news this morning that Google is buying Pyra Labs, a popular home for blogging. It will be interesting to see what Google does with this.

One thing that I am reasonably sure of: Google is unlikely to try to evolve into a general purpose portal site like Yahoo.

Since my business plan for KnowledgeBooks.com is to develop technology for individuals and small companies who want to add capability to their portals, I must say... that I am rooting for the little guy here: as the web evolves to also support the Semantic Web I hope that we get a combination of network hubs like Yahoo and Google and millions of smaller special interest sites.

Commercialization of the web will continue but I am also betting that the web (and semantic web) wil always be a place where individuals and small companies express their bliss.
