Did we blow it with CORBA?

I did a small CORBA job last night and early this morning for a customer. Since CORBA is interwoven with J2EE name services and an option for Java RMI based RPC, I am frequently using CORBA, one way or another.

Still, doing a small "pure CORBA" job (this was in Java), reminded me just how great the CORBA technology is and how we, as an industry, may have blown it moving to XML based web services like SOAP, WSDL, and UDDI.

Now, don't get me wrong, a good part of my income involves doing work related to SOAP, WSDL, and UDDI and I do like this technology.

However, I can't help thinking "where would we be now" if there had been free CORBA infrastructure tools when CORBA was rolled out. I believe that the relatively high price of early CORBA infrastructure tools basically kept CORBA from universal acceptance.

What is clear is that there needs to be a ubiquitos standard for interoperability of computer systems.
