Padova Trip ReportAlas, my long-overdue trip report on the Plone Sprint in Padova. Reflab, the leaders for workflow in Zope and a ZEA sponsor, invited me to Padova (thanks!). These Plone sprints are both enjoyable and useful.3:50:38 PM ![]() |
Topicalla and Mozile: Mozilla In FrontJon Udell has been writing lately about the bright outlook for Mozilla, including innovative new uses for the platform. Here's two outstanding examples: Topicalla and Mozile. Topicalla is a blisteringly innovative project from Neil Deakin, the guy behind XulPlanet. (Note: the Main Tutorial at XulPlanet is the best documentation I've ever seen, because Neil understands the concept of "finishing work".) Neil describes it as: "Topicalla allows one to view information using a UI that is generated based on the kind of data available." Sound like Haystack? Well, a little. But based on Neil's review of Haystack, I place high hopes on Topicalla. :^) I'm also deeply interested in RPath and his template system. (My comments go in more depth on the reasons.) Update: here is a link to a screenshot of Neil's application.
Mozile, on the other hand, is a more focused and recognizable application: the
in-browser, WYSIWYG editor. Some big differences though. Unlike Microsoft's
rich text widget and Midas (Mozilla's Composer-driven implementation of the
same), Mozile generates XHTML. Also (like Midas), Mozile uses CSS to specify
the editable regions, instead of relying on the ridiculous
This action in Mozilla, sans the $750M question, shows great promise. Many
skeptics give the laundry list of reasons why IE users won't switch. I think they miss
the point. We don't need the late switchers, the last 50%. Rather, we just need to
get Mozilla to 20% market share. (Jon's user agent log is a leading indicator on
this milestone.) At that point, the iron fist can no longer rule. That's the tipping
point we need to reach. |
Fathers and DaughtersTuesday was my little girl's birthday. She turned 5. Five!! Incredible.
In the afternoon we went out front and practiced bicycle riding. I had been on
the road a bunch recently, so it was a sweet moment spending some time with
her. When the sun is shining, and your daughter looks up at you with pride that
she's learning to ride her bike, you know things are well in the world. |
Algomas: Zope in RennesI recently got to meet Gaëtan Bourgé from Algomas, a Zope consulting company right here in Rennes. Instead of taking a train, to take another train, to take a plane to go meet a Zope company, I can just take a...bus! Very exciting. :^)
Tomorrow Gaëtan is taking me to a conference about technology in Brittany. |
EPC2003 Interview: Moshe ZadkaTom Deprez conducted a very interesting and informative EuroPython 2003 interview with Moshe Zadka, a Python core developer and member of the Twisted team. I've had the pleasure of meeting Moshe at previous Python conferences. He's also one of the organizers of the conferences (the lightning talks track).10:33:42 AM ![]() |
Zope Track at EuroPython2003Heimo Laukkanen, my ZEA comrade, did all of the organization for the Zope track at EuroPython 2003 in Belgium, June 25-27. After looking at the work he's done, I must say that it's an outrage. Heimo has supplied us with an embarassment of riches in the Zope track. The only solution is that we all must attend the conference. Guido talking about Zope 3? Steve showing TTW dev in Zope 3? Plone/Silva/icoya/Kontentor/IKARRO/CPS? Archetypes and the Collective? Workflow from the masters? A sprint beforehand? And my personal dream -- XML, XML, and more XML? Don't be stupid and miss the conference. Honestly. This is like a Halley's Comet event.
