Question: What is Zope?Honestly, I'm not kidding. In the press release ZC issued yesterday, they state: "Zope is the premier open source content management software..." But in a comment by Jeffrey Shell on a weblog post earlier this week, he said "I say this as someone who does not wish to see Zope 3 (core) become a content management system." As far as I know, Jim and Brian have tried to re-position Zope itself as an application server for which other products, like CPS, Silva, and Plone as content management systems, can be built. ZC also has proprietary products built atop Zope, targeted at areas beyond CMS. ZC has said these targeted commercial products were the future of the business model.
Thus, is Zope "open source content management software"? Is it an application server?
If the answer is "both", then that's an issue. |
Takeshi launches Zope and Plone in JapanMany of the folks that go to Plone and Zope events have chatted with Takeshi Yamamoto from Japan, who is a regular at community events. He has worked hard at establishing Zope and Plone in Japan while building connections to the worldwide community. He has now launched, with backing from Zope Corporation, a new company called Zope Japan Corporation, as part of a larger effort called Open Source Japan Group. This new company will, in Takeshi's words, "build a strong Asian Zope enterprise". Takeshi understands the community and the opportunity, I think, and will prove a good force for growing the worlds of Plone and Zope in Japan.
I asked Takeshi if he could take 5 minutes of my slot at the Plone Conference in Vienna
to talk about Plone in Japan, which he accepted. If you are going to the conference, make
sure you chat with him. |
