A Smart Room to Boost Design Productivity. Environments that enhance collaboration between people are nothing new. For example, SGI's Reality Centers exist since 1995. But this prototype meeting room developed at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU), the "Barn," is a new example of an IT-assisted workspace specifically designed for brainstorming and idea generation. Computerworld wrote an interesting article about the "Barn".
It's filled with cameras, projectors, microphones, speakers, and other electronic equipments. Students log into the system by using RFIDs tags and wear sensors which track their location. But the real key difference is the usage of the "Thinking Surface," an intelligent whiteboard on which team members sketch and share their ideas. [Smart Mobs]
Wouldn't this be great for application development requirements gathering with clients? Also, I can see programmers using this for design sessions. But, I'm not wearing one of those dorky looking things on my head.
