Today George Galloway has delivered a devastating blow to the Senate committee that had falsely accused him of accepting money from illegal Iraqi oil deals. This is a historic address that brings to mind the time of the McCarthy hearings.
For the first time since the Iraq war someone has confronted America with the truth and the lies and cheats of the Bush administration. For the first time they have heard on their own ground that they are mass murderers.
Just today it became known that the US knew of the kickbacks for oil and allowed them to continue.
Guardian: "A report released last night by Democratic staff on a Senate investigations committee presents documentary evidence that the Bush administration was made aware of illegal oil sales and kickbacks paid to the Saddam Hussein regime but did nothing to stop them."
You can watch Galloway's testimony on the BBC site. I haven't found it on any American site yet. The quality is rather bad. This is the viewing page.

NYTimes: "Newsweek formally retracted a recent report today that said the Koran had been desecrated by American guards at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, an article linked to riots in Pakistan and Afghanistan that led to the deaths of at least 17 people.
Throughout the day today, the White House, the State Department and other critics of the Newsweek report, a short article in the May 9 issue, assailed the magazine for not issuing a retraction despite acknowledging that the official had recently expressed doubt about his own knowledge of the accusation against the guards."

Of course the original Newsweek story is true. The Bush administration has forced the retraction in order to limit further unrest. As the Bush regime has no intention of changing its course of war and torture, they must prevent publication of the truth.
ICH: "Contrary to White House spin, the allegations of religious desecration at Guantanamo published by Newsweek on May 9, 2005, are common among ex-prisoners and have been widely reported outside the United States. Several former detainees at the Guantanamo and Bagram prisons have reported instances of their handlers sitting or standing on the Koran, throwing or kicking it in toilets, and urinating on it."

The result:
Independent: "As the death toll of troops mounts in Iraq and Afghanistan, America's military recruiting figures have plummeted to an all-time low. Thousands of US servicemen and women are now refusing to serve their country."
