Homecoming
So this is the homecoming weekend at Baumholder, with just about every sport having home events. The tennis team got to play host to Bamberg this afternoon, and oh, was it interesting.
Faithful readers will know that last weekend up in Bitburg, we didn't do all that great. Other than Zain, no one else won a match.
This week was better.
Our meet was held at the German tennis hall in Baumholder, a place those aforementioned faithful readers will remember was the site of a vicious attack on my genitalia. This time around I wasn't on the court playing. I got to play coach instead.
The high school guys defeated everyone Bamberg had on their team. They chalked up seven wins in singles and doubles. Our only loss on the boys side came at the middle school level, and even that loss wasn't as bad as last week. Granted Bamberg isn't nearly as stiff a competition as we'll face once the European tournament rolls around at the end of the month, but it was still very nice to see more people winning than just Zain. And for the record, he clobbered his singles opponent 6-0, 6-1.
The match of the day on the guy's side came between John and the Bamberg number two, a fiesty fellow who could really hustle. Their match went to a tie-break with John pulling it out 7-5.
The freshmen girls had it rough, though. While they seemed to play better this week, they still couldn't get into the win column. Our number one, Isabelle, fought hard in a hotly contested match against a senior from Bamberg. After a long argument about the score at the end of the second set, Isabelle ended up losing in the third. I'm proud of the effort she put forth, though.
I'm also proud of the number of people who showed up to support the team. Quite a few parents, siblings, and friends came by to cheer us on. Now if I can only convince them to go on the five hour ride to Hohenfels in a couple of weeks...
