Let's Put An End To It
Did you know that everytime you see restaurant staff singing "Happy Birthday" to a customer, you may very well be witnessing a crime in the form of copyright infringement?
That's right. "Happy Birthday" is owned by Time Warner, and whenever someone uses "Happy Birthday" in a commercial enterprise, Time Warner is due their royalties.
Now while the royalties probably aren't much for each instance, the song seems awfully popular and that money has got to add up.
So, the next time you see "Happy Birthday" sung to customers by employees at a restaurant, or similar workplace, I hope you do the right thing: request to speak to the manger and ask if the establishment has received clearance from ASCAP to perform the song.
If not -- report their asses!
