Jim's Pond - Exploring the Universe of Ideas
"Beware when the great God lets loose a thinker on this planet. Then all things are at risk. It is as when a conflagration has broken out in a great city, and no man knows what is safe, or where it will end." --Ralph Waldo Emerson

Helpful Hints - XML

Years ago I spent a few days familiarizing myself with how to work with HTML. In short order I became reasonably proficient in developing HTML documents. Not long after that word processing software was HTML enabled. The next phase was predictable. I got lazy and forgot most of my HTML skills.

Now I'm faced with a blogging tool that doesn't do all of the XML commands for me. Maybe that's part of using a Mac and dealing with the software. Pete tells me that his PC software offers him buttons for underlining, bold, italics, among other features.

Even so, some functions aren't covered and even PC users find it necessary to go to the XML source at times. I searched the web for XML commands and found a helpful site. W3Schools.com provides a nice XML tutorial. The differences between HTML and XML are explained along with many different examples of how to structure your code. A quiz is provided to test your comprehension.

I found that after a few minutes I was able to work my way through the tutorial and start using my new found skills. I also noticed that Phil Windley had a piece on Government XML in his most recent web log.

Well, good luck. Hopefully this will help if you find yourself in need of some XML skills.

That's all for now......
