Jim's Pond - Exploring the Universe of Ideas
"Beware when the great God lets loose a thinker on this planet. Then all things are at risk. It is as when a conflagration has broken out in a great city, and no man knows what is safe, or where it will end." --Ralph Waldo Emerson

Wednesday - Telling the Stories

There is a new entrant to the Utah blogging community. After some persuasion Barry Bryson is now on line. Cool.

Utah State University in the Uintah Basin

I recently ran into Guy Denton at a Community Impact Board meeting. It was good to see him. We met two years ago in Roosevelt, Utah. Guy is the director for USU in the Uintah Basin.

Prior to his assignment there he was building colleges in Africa for eleven years. He didn't see much difference in that challenge and what he's doing now.

When I met him he was just completing the new USU center in Roosevelt. It is a very nice facility with new classrooms, a Gym, kitchen, etc. At that time there were about 1500 students attending classes in the basin. The goal is to bring that total to over 4000.

Guy's point was that this could never happen without distance education. More importantly for me, it couldn't happen without the support and services provided by the Utah Education Network.

It's great to be needed. And it's great to be a part of providing good services. Sometimes my staff and I feel overwhelmed. We have lost 5 positions in the past 18 months. The workload continues to increase regardless of the budget problems felt in the State.

It's good to be reminded that what we do matters. Sometimes it's easy to forget with all the crazy stuff going on these days.

That's all for now........
