Jim's Pond - Exploring the Universe of Ideas
"Beware when the great God lets loose a thinker on this planet. Then all things are at risk. It is as when a conflagration has broken out in a great city, and no man knows what is safe, or where it will end." --Ralph Waldo Emerson

Sunday - The Big Picture

The Case for Belief

This is why I dislike blogging. I have a point to make, but can't quite decide how to make it. I've attempted to start half a dozen times without success. The boys and I went on a late evening walk so I could clear my head.

Today's major point is the power of belief. I'm not talking about believing in a religious or even a spiritual sense. Though certainly that applies. Perhaps the idea of belief is too abstract, too broad. There are certainly more questions than answers.

I will try to simplify my thoughts.

At UEN we have decided to concentrate on improving teamwork (working together). We are doing this for the purpose of "getting things done". We all want to do amazing things. There is positive energy in the halls, meeting rooms, work spaces and offices of UEN.

Good things are happening. Can we sustain it? I've talked to many of the UEN staff. Often I hear the same concern. If this continues then pretty soon we will all start believing in our ability. Just a few more success and then we can believe. It makes me smile. This is sort of like the idea that "everything will work out in the end".

What if you don't have enough patience to wait? I don't. What if you want it to work out now? I do. I want to get to success quickly. I think that this can be done. I think it is within our power to ensure our success.

What if ensuring success was as simple as believing? I think it is. Again, I have to bring this back to a very finite point. Let's, for a minute, consider the proposition of "working together to get things done" coupled with the idea of "the power of belief".

Let's also imagine what would happen if everyone at UEN "believes" that they are part of a team that does amazing things. How would that affect us? Our belief would influence our attitude.

Attitudes would be developed around our belief. Attitudes of cooperation. Attitudes of sharing knowledge. Attitudes of getting things done and attitudes of success. Imagine if our attitudes were consistent with being great and doing great things by working together.

These attitudes would allow us to make investments in each other. We would feel free to invest time, tools, resources, and skills. All without fear because we are a team. We would believe it, feel it and act accordingly.

For sure we could still fail. But not because of internal strife. Outside influences would be our only concern. And belief would have a powerful influence on those outside forces. The concentrated strength gained by collective belief would be irresistible.

And for sure no one ever succeeded without belief. Think of Thomas Edison. He invented the light bulb on the 8001st try. Can you imagine if his staff would have taken a wait and see attitude. Edison likely wouldn't have made it past the 100th attempt. It was his total belief in success that drove him on. And it paid off for him.

It may be too simplistic. And I may be proven wrong. But know this. I choose to believe.

That's all for now......
