Jim's Pond - Exploring the Universe of Ideas
"Beware when the great God lets loose a thinker on this planet. Then all things are at risk. It is as when a conflagration has broken out in a great city, and no man knows what is safe, or where it will end." --Ralph Waldo Emerson

An Important Dialog

Daughter: Mom, what happens to the water when it goes down the drain?

Mother: Why don't you go ask your father?

Daughter: Because I don't want to know that much.

Perhaps that is a warning.

Today's Question: To blog or not to blog? Is that the question?

I'm thinking about my blogging future. It's been on my mind for the past few days. Perhaps it is the fact that I have only 8 days left on my free trial. Whatever the reason, it's weighing on me right now.

It's not that the experience has been troublesome. To the contrary, there are several very positive aspects to blogging. But there are negative aspects, too. Following is a list outlining my thoughts.

Positives:

- Blogging is a way to enforce discipline in writing.

- Blogging has enabled me to get thoughts collected that have only been in my brain until now.

- Blogging is a good way to share ideas.

- Blogging helps me to connect with a bigger community.

- I find myself preparing my entry as I go about my daily activities.

- I see opportunities to blog in many of my daily activities.

- Blogging has helped me to get my thoughts organized.

- I have a better appreciation for good and bad writing.

Negatives

- Blogging has been, for the most part, a monolog with little or no opportunity for feedback.

-It feels odd to try and strike up conversations referring to my blog, yet I write about things that interest me.

- It is time consuming.

- It takes dedication.

- What I have to say isn't always interesting or useful.

- I begin to feel that some entries are forced.

- Some of the shortcomings of my writing style have emerged over time.

- I've been staying up late and getting up early to complete my daily entry.

- Blogging adds a new dimension of stress to my life.

- Blogging takes away from my study time.

Continuing a web log seems to be a natural conclusion. But for some reason I don't want to just make that choice without serious introspection. I don't want to just be writing for writing's sake. I hope to have thoughtful and insightful blogs every day. That may be too much to hope for.

I've also been frustrated because of my lack of expertise with the radio tool. I'd love to spend time experimenting with templates and customizing my page. It takes time. Time that is dear to me and that I don't always have.

I'll continue to consider this question and will likely make a decision over the weekend. This will depend on the time I find to think and consider. Certainly there is merit to the process. Is it worth it? That question is one that only I can answer.

That's all for now.........
