Jim's Pond - Exploring the Universe of Ideas
"Beware when the great God lets loose a thinker on this planet. Then all things are at risk. It is as when a conflagration has broken out in a great city, and no man knows what is safe, or where it will end." --Ralph Waldo Emerson

Taking Criticism in Stride

Mike Vance advocates reading 300 books a year. A few years back he bowed to criticism. He was told that there is no way for a person to read that much. So he lowered his recommendation to 200. That drew criticism. The figure was still too high. Mike lowered his recommendation again, to 100 books. Still, he received criticism. That's when Mike said to hell with his critics and raised the number back to 300.

I've known Mike for about a decade now. And I've been listening to Mike for almost 25 years. I still don't know if Mike is serious about reading 300 books. I think (and this is purely my opinion) that what Mike is saying is that it's impossible to read too many books. So we ought to be reading a lot.

I respect Mike. He is smart and thoughtful. Even he is susceptible to criticism. In the end, he realized that no matter what he said, someone would be critical. So he went back to his original idea, not bowing to his critics. That's cool. It's a lesson we should all learn to one degree or another..........
