Jim's Pond - Exploring the Universe of Ideas
"Beware when the great God lets loose a thinker on this planet. Then all things are at risk. It is as when a conflagration has broken out in a great city, and no man knows what is safe, or where it will end." --Ralph Waldo Emerson

Why I'll Be Here for Another Five

Covey has a principle called sharpening the saw. It's a good idea. It's what I'm doing now. Thinking about the past five years. Remembering the good. Enjoying the accomplishments. Feeling a bit of the sting of some of my failures. Trying to understand what it will take to do better in the future. Making sure that I contribute and that I belong. Preparing for the stresses and strains that will go with the next five years. Making sure that I am realistic about what will be needed to meet those challenges and making certain that I am willing to give the time and effort it will take to perform at an excellent level. Gaining the resolve to move forward into a difficult and uncertain future.

I really like my job at UEN. In enjoy working with our customers. Developing my skills as a manager. Getting to be a part of a smart, capable technical staff. Seeing the evolution of a network that has real value and that is used by many people all around the state to learn. Being part of the education process. It's a cool job and it is my privilege to be here.

A couple of years ago I ran into the former UEN Technical Services Director. I often think of his words. He said, "I had the best network job in the state and I left it voluntarily." I also remember my reply, "Thank you."...........
