I noticed this posting over on the Google blog that the Google Desktop Search has gone 1.0, after addressing a number of beta users feedback. Since I'm not sure how long it would take to index my machine, and since I need to use my machine tomorrow in Zagreb for an ADF seminar I'm running for Oracle Croatia's partners, I'll download and give this a spin on Friday when the seminar is done.
The list of things that they've added handle all of the problems I saw with the beta. I needed it to work with Firefox and Thunderbird, and be able to easily index text files of any kind. Using these plugins already release for the 1.0 production, you can configure it to search through text files with any extensions you want. The days of my hunting for code samples in *.java files all over my machine will soon be over!
