counterspin has linked to a poll on the website of country station KKBQ regarding statements made by the Dixie Chicks to the effet that they're embarassed, as Texans, by Bush. Apparently, the poll wording has changed a number of times, but the majority of respondents are in favor of ousting the Dixie Chicks from the KKBQ playlists.
What got me, though, was the other poll on the website. This poll question is:
With Germany, Russia, China and France not backing the U.S. at the U.N. do you feel we should boycott items that are imported from these countries, such as French wine, German automobiles, etc... ?
Currently 68% of respondents voting in favor of boycotts. Besides the fact that this sort of attitude only magnifies the ignorance and arrogance that has gotten us in this spot in the first place, it makes me wonder: If we boycott China, where are we going to get all our American flags to wave? Almost all of the small novelty flags are imported. More than half of all American flags come from China ("China was the source of the majority of U.S. flags we imported into this country last year. In fact, China accounted for 30 million dollars of the total value of 52 million dollars of American flags we imported." U.S. Census)
Perhaps these guys have it right. If we are committed to our freedoms (fries, toast, kisses, etc...), perhaps we should prove we mean it by taking down all American flags that can't be proven as made in the USA. There'd be a whole lot less red, white, and blue around.
