Murphy continues to be a regular part of my home computing life, lately in the guise of hardware failures--something I am slow to suspect. First it was adding 512 Mb memory. Seemed simple enough, although my eMachines manual was useless, as was their website. I will say, it was nice that the motherboard beeped at me as soon as I powered up, that made it pretty clear something was wrong. Anyway, after trying all different configurations without success, I hauled my PC to BestBuy. They told me there was a $30 installation charge, which is highway robbery, but I had to get to the bottom of it. After some messing around, they suspected bad DIMM, so I got a new one and put it in before I left the store (I made it clear that I wasn't leaving till it was working, and I didn't expect to pay the installation charge since it was their bad hardware. They didn't argue).

Then tonight, I finally hooked my color printer back up, to my other computer (I had replaced it in the primary printing position with a laser). Couldn't get anything to print. Eventually, after trying many other things, including, of course, a few reboots, I began to suspect the USB cable. Fortunately, my scanner has the same cable, so I tried that and it worked. Arrrrgh!
