It seems that the panel investigating the loss of the shuttle Columbia have determined that the loss of a few tiles would not have been enough to cause the disaster. The temperatures recorded inside the landing gear bay can only be explained by plasma actually getting in, so the aluminium skin of the shuttle had to have been pierced by something according to this article on spacetoday.net

Fame at last

I had my 15 mintues of fame this morning. Or more like five minutes. Daire O'Brien interviewed me over the phone for the Enthusiasts slot of the Flipside on Newstalk 106 this morning. I was talking about Clubmac and I managed to get a plug in for our next meeting on March 5.
