I forgot to mention in my report on Phoenix Con
that I announced a bid to host Eurocon in Ireland in 2007. The decision
on where to hold the 2007 Eurocon will be made at the 2005 event which
in keeping with usual practice is being held concurrently with
Interaction in Glasgow.
Those with long memories will recall that in 1995, Dublin won the bid
for the 1997 Eurocon. The committee promptly fell apart and the
Convention was rescued at the last moment by the sterling efforts of
Michael Carroll, Pearse Smythe and myself under the most excellent
leadership of Karen Bollard. At the time I vowed 'Never Again' and then
promptly joined the committee for Octocon Lite. Since then I've
co-chaired Octocon X and concommed two more Octocons. Officially, I've
retired from con-running my only activity being Agent: Ireland for Interaction.
But something attracted me to the idea of doing another Eurocon and
this time doing it properly. A two year lead up to the bid would allow
me to identify a suitable venue, a good guest of honour, in fact maybe
even more than one, some sources of funding and so on. To avoid burn
out I've come up with the idea of two committees: a bid committee who
would run the bid and a con committee who would take over if we
actually win the bid and run the convention. There would naturally be
some overlap between the two committees but there would be no
obligation on anyone to stay for the full four year stretch.
Anyway, I pitched the idea at the 'Future Cons' panel session just
before the closing ceremony at P-Con and said that I would take
pre-supporting memberships for o2. People started flooding up
immediately which took me completely by surprise. I took 29
pre-supports, including my own. So that's an auspicious start. We'll
see what sort of a reaction I get at They Came And Shaved Us.
