It's been about 10 days since Tesco opened its filling station in Finglas and the effect has been astounding. The day it opened, Tesco was selling unleaded petrol for 79.4cent per litre (that's around 55p per litre in Sterling). Two days later, Charlie McCreevy added 5c per litre onto the cost of petrol with immediate effect. Naturally enough, that evening there was a very long queue outside Tesco. Those motorists needen't have bothered. Today, Tesco is selling at 79.3c per litre. Not only has it absorbed the extra taxation, it has cut its price (albeit by 0.1c per litre).

But what's interesting is that practically every filling station in the area has cut its price to match. Isn't competition wonderful.
