The first flight of the Wright Flyer lasted 12 seconds but ushered in an era that opened up the world. We now travel distances in hours that used to take days or even weeks. In the space of a century speeds have gone from a few miles per hour to several times the speed of sound. True, the Wright brothers' invention has been used for less beneficial reasons.
