In this personal commentary contributed to Forum 18 News Service, Norwegian politician and religious freedom activist Johannes Østtveit recounts how his experience meeting people who had been imprisoned in communist-ruled countries awakened him to the impact of religious freedom violations. He argues that freedom of religion – so often violated in countries around the world – is the forgotten human right. The fundamental right to change faith is under attack in some mainly Muslim, Hindu and Buddhist countries. Even in Sweden, an official report argues that faiths causing "general offence" should be excluded from the right to practice freely, despite the fact that international human rights conventions allow for no such exception. |
