The Buryat of China - People Profile
Most of the Buryat live in southern Siberia in the region surrounding Lake Baikal. However, almost 78,000 Buryat can also be found in northern China, in the vast region known as Inner Mongolia. They inhabit the extreme northern part of Inner Mongolia, near the Russian and Mongolian borders.

CHINA: Call for clemency for dissident He Depu (Reporters Without Borders)
10-15-03 Reporters Without Borders today appealed for clemency on humanitarian grounds for dissident He Depu, tried yesterday by a Beijing court which now has 40 days to announce its verdict and pass sentence. The circumstances of the trial, which lasted only two hours and denied the most basic rights of defence, suggest that the sentence could be heavy. He appeared to be in very poor health in court.

Bush Presses for Democracy in Myanmar. President Bush pressed Thailand's leader Sunday to help restore democracy in neighboring Myanmar and to push for the release of pro-democracy opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi. Bush and Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra met on the eve of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit, likely to take up the repressive rule of Myanmar's junta. Tibetan Buddhists Are Awed by Christian Concert (Religion Jounal)
The gospel was preached in the heart of Tibetan Buddhism this summer, when 1,500 monks, spiritual seekers and tourists attended an explicitly Christian concert in Dharamsala, India. The city, in the foothills of the Himalayas in northern India, is the spiritual and political center of world Tibetan Buddhism.
