The Virtual Critical Care Unit has been a two year pilot program and was shown to the public yesterday by the New South Wales health minister.The unit enables specialists at the Nepean Hospital to instruct emergency medical staff at Blue Mountains District Anzac Memorial Hospital in Katoomba,some 54 kilometres away.Using a high-speed internet connection,the unit has a computer screen to monitor vital signs, two television monitors to display the patient and medical staff, a microphone and mobile cameras.Although "tele-medicine'' is not new,it's use in an emergency care service of a public hospital is.
