Kristof on American beliefs Believe it, or Not (reg. req.)
Ironically, Kristof was the same writer several months ago who wrote in the Old Gray Lady that the American press needed to "the American fundamentalists better" because they permeated the nation's population so. I find it somewhat entertaining that 300 years after the Enlightenment, Kristof is still parroting the old MO that believing in things like the virigin birth are destructive simply because they are unsupported by historical data and posits a false dichotomy between the supposedly irreconcilable "intellectual" and "mystical" elements of a belief system.
I'm also somewhat relieved by the knowledge that the statement "So Many Right-Wing Christians...So Few Lions" shows that even non-believers can be close-minded. :) (Though my friend has a bumper sticker that says "Doing my Part to Piss Off The Religious Right" that I sometimes sympathize with. Along with another friend with a shirt that reads "JESUS. Protect Me From Your Followers." But now this thread is getting long-winded and off-topic.)
