Passion

I have passion, true passion, for only a few things. Holistic healthcare, renewable energy, my family, politics and highly-functioning teams.

In order to have a business that I care about, I decided to incorporate one of my passions directly into the business. Having done it now with the Simplicity Institute, I now believe that every startup needs the owner's passion incorporated directly into it from the start. Here is what that buys you.

By starting a business that you have passion for, you have the energy reserve to get you through the hard times. Every startup has its difficulties: cashflow problems, lawsuits, employee theft, etc. Any of these problems can take the wind out of your sails in a second unless you have a stronger driving force. For people who have a passion for making a lot of money, great, they can start any business they like and they'll make it. I think many business planning courses and books err when they say that all entrepreneurs need to have this "money hunger" in order to succeed. You need hunger, yes, but it doesn't have to be money. Could be holistic health.

That's my unsolicited advice for the day. Incorporate your passion into your startup business. Then you'll never run dry on enthusiasm. Every morning I wake up and say "Today I have to work to make holistic health the major healthcare system of North America." It gets me going.
