Last week was a big week for tech conferences: chiefly O'Reilly eTech and SXSW. Didn't go. Didn't even keep up with the attendant blogs. So I've no great thoughts to share, except "What's with Gawker Inc. winning all those Bloggies?? Huh?" I mean Defamer (twice!), Wonkette and Gizmodo all won their respective categories.
Meanwhile, the Tsunami blog (SEA-EAT)
was up for four of these things, performed a genuine public service,
and absolutely should have taken home something. Not on yer life.
Defamer won New Blog, Bookslut won Topical Blog, and Gothamist won "Non-Weblog Content of a Weblog Site." And BoingBoing was Blog of the Year (and Community Blog).
I don't want to say the winners were undeserving (I mean, I'm deeply
devoted to both BoingBoing and Wonkette for fun and all), but SEA-EAT
had just one shot. And if blogging is supposed to be about the little
guy getting heard, having the Gawker blogs at the top of the list makes
me wonder about the premature corporatization of the blogosphere. But
it's really just at the "wonder" stage, not even close to worried. The
Bloggies' page still offers up lots of links to nominated little guys
'n gals, many of whom I've yet to visit.
And maybe next year, WorldChanging (or even Metaverse!) will get its moment in the sun. At least one of those deserves it.
