Novell had some other news for BrainShare participants, but apparently CEO Jack Messman also had to handle some damage control in the wake of some FUD-producing analyst survey.

LinuxInsider quotes a Yankee Group survey of 100 NetWare-using companies claiming that 80% of them are migrating to Windows Server by 2006 (with 70% of the rest choosing Red Hat over SUSE). The survey is not (yet) at the consulting firm's site, but wouldn't be accessible to us non-paying customers anyway. The survey and its author, Laura DiDio, was quoted in a Microsoft press release last week, claiming that 1.5 million NetWare users had migrated to Windows since they launched a campaign last November.

The press release makes one curious about which dog was wagging which tail, but I'd definitely want to see the questions in that survey. Like to see some reasons, too.

The other news at yesterday's BrainShare session was Novell's roadmap for GroupWise and NetMail, as they get integrated into the Hula project, discussed here a month ago. There was also a partnership announced with Java application manager JBoss.

Today's news is that they're starting up an "Open Source Technology Center" business incubator with 25,000 sq. ft. of space on the Novell campus in Provo. There's financial support available besides the space too. Can't be anything wrong with more open-source companies coming online. Wonder if any of them would want a slightly worn technical writer?

The Asian Development Bank reported this morning that, three months after the Asian earthquake and tsunami, governments from the developed world have not delivered on US$4 billion of aid pledged in December and January.

Poppy Bush spoke to the gathering, essentially blaming corrupt government officials in the needy nations for the "concern" the rich governments allegedly have. Certainly this is a likely problem, but surely it's easier to control how aid money is spent today than when Somoza stole most of the money sent to Nicaragua after their 1972 earthquake.

The US Agency for International Development says that $123 million has been spent so far, and the federal budget calls for $950 million in total aid. One hopes this is not more propaganda and funny numbers, but if true, these are good things. Here's hoping Congress keeps an eye on where that money goes--and more precisely, that it goes to helping real people, not just the local ruling class.
