Dying Cells Dragged Screaming From Under the Microscope.

NATURE. Vol. 423.  8th May, 2003. og 106-107. (Catherine Zandonella, New York)

James Gimzewski and Andrew Pelling are working on using nanotechnology to study the cell by listening to the sound that its membrane makes.  It is thought that the cell's outer membrane, using yeast as a substrate vibrate differently according to the state of health of the cell.  An atomic force microscope is used as a stethoscope as it is scans over the cell.   (Sonocytology)  This may be amplified.  Dead cells give out a signal resembling static on the radio and if a yeast cell is treated with harmful alcohol (isoproply) a high pitched noise is emitted.

Further investigations are needed and on mamillian cells which have softer, less defined outer membranes.  Similar studies have been done on rat's cardiac cells*.  U.C.L.A. cancer pathologist Michael Teitell is now teaming with the pair to look at the possibility of such vibration changes occuring during genetic mutations within a cell as well as respones to external stressors.

Death.

Death- the last taboo.

"Throughout the world, death and the rituals that surround it are steeped in taboos. Death is celebrated, embraced and feared. Around death and the dead, cultures put in place diverse restrictions and practices associated with clothing, food and ritual. This website explores what happens to us when we die and the different ways we deal with death."

An extremely comprehensive, no-nonsense Australian website.  Part of the Australian Museum online.  It maintains an informative line, never giving into either over-sentimentality nor an excessive sterile clinical approach.

Stethoscopes.

Everyone reccommends and uses 3M Littman. They have a wide variety available, in different colours and for use in different specialities; Paediatrics, Cardiology etc... A history of the stethocsope can be found here.
